Spring Session of Around the World Launched
22 Jun 2009

April / May / June 2009 Highlights:

Week 1: Program Launch – Canada & North America
This session a smaller group has allowed Tasha to accommodate individual needs. The kids are excited to be a part of this program as many of them heard from their classmates that it was fun. We began once again with an introduction to our Atlases and a fun Atlas game- “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”.

Week 2: India
Emily from World Literacy paid us a visit and gave a wonderful presentation on India and World Literacy Canada. The kids were interested in all that she had to say and had a lot of questions for her. After her presentation, the students went to the computers to research a current event happening in India.

Week 3: Brazil and South America
The lesson began with some Capoeira and Samba video clips from YouTube. The youth were unaware of either martial art or dance, so it was a great introduction to Brazil and South America. As we do every week, we searched for South America and Brazil in our atlases, and studied the capital, population, cardinal location and coordinates of Brazil. The second part of the evening focused on fair trade. We did a banana fair trade activity, which allowed the kids to learn about all the jobs that are a part of how bananas and other fair trade foods make it to your supermarket and to their dining table.

Week 4: Senegal and Africa
Today's focus was Africa. One of TNO’s wonderful volunteers – Asha – gave a presentation on a North African country that she had visited. The next activity was a photojournalism activity. The kids were given photographs from the newspaper, and asked to imagine they were the journalist writing a story to accompany the picture. The evening finished with two speakers from Global Aware.

Week 5: Israel
Once again TNO volunteer Asha gave a presentation to the group about Israel. The group used their atlases to locate Israel and to learn some important facts and figures. Following the presentation we discussed this session's final project. Each participant will pick a country of their choice, research the country, and then present their information to the group using PowerPoint. For each country the students will learn about location, population, currency, languages, religions, interesting facts, and world issues.

Week 6: Writing and Powerpoint Workshop
Today Tasha, Sheila and 2 wonderful TNO volunteers worked individually with all of the youth to make essays using the information they researched last week, and to begin their PowerPoint presentations. The room was quiet as everyone worked away diligently on their presentations, stopping only to peek at each other’s work.
