Activity # 1: Flood Geography Review the section of this web site that deals with the science of floods, and then answer the following questions: 1. What regions of Canada seem to be most at risk from significant flooding? What factors contribute to the high-risk status of these areas? 2. Atlantic Canada experiences, on average, fewer major floods than other areas of Canada. Why?     Activity #2: Flood Mitigation Research the history of flooding in your area (city, town, or province). How often has flooding occurred? How severe was the flooding? What was the most significant flood that occurred in your area? Suggest ways that damage from flooding in your area could be reduced.     Activity #3: The Red River Flood of 1997 Read the Red River Flood of 1997 in Manitoba on the Internet. Visit the Environment Canada web site. Conduct independent research on your own. Find the following information: 1. When did the flood occur? 2. How much damage was caused? 3. Discuss the progress of the flood the day that it occurred. 4. Were there any human errors which caused the event to be more catastrophic than it could have been? 5. Could flood the clean-up or mitigation have been handled better?
