In sports such as football, boys pursuing CFL or NFL dreams begin training early. In addition to the traditionally organized sports in the school system, most competitive sports for children involve comprehensive club systems with regional and national competitions. Even though girls and young women now bring their own physical styles to sport, sport leaders fear the dropping levels of participation. There are more opportunities than ever for girls to play sports. We have not, however, achieved a state where girls and boys enthusiastically participate in daily physical activity or choose to adopt exercise and sport as lifelong activities, in spite of our knowledge of the long-term health benefits of activity and its contribution to quality of life.
