From the beginning of European settlement in North America to mid-1800s, taverns were important community institutions that served multiple purposes. Although religious and civil authorities often endeavoured to curtail their activities or popularity, taverns were relied on for refuge, sustenance, information, and socialization, and were even used as sites for political organization.
