From Instruction to Delight

An Anthology of Children's Literature to 1850, Fourth Edition

Edited by Patricia Demers

This rich survey of children's literature from the middle ages to the mid-nineteenth century features a remarkable variety of literary forms, including fairy tales, fables, letters, and poems. Drawing on an ever-growing body of scholarship, this anthology places each selection in the context of its era and helps students develop an appreciation of early children's literature.

Readership : Students taking second- or third-year courses in children's literature or the history of children's literature in English departments at universities and colleges.

Reviews

  • "The inclusion of more fairy tales and fables better represents an important area of children's literature, both for the specified time period and for later developments in the field."
    --Ann F. Howey, Brock University

  • "To me, this is the major resource on early children's literature; I find it very useful."
    --Gabrielle Ceraldi, Western University
