Special Features

  • Speaking Up - students work with their prior knowledge and talk informally to a partner or in a small group about what they know about the topic. In these activities they begin to "talk themselves into understanding." They work with their own ideas and vocabulary, then read the text and look at the visuals.
  • Speaking Out - students link what they knew before with what they have learned in the text. They are given the opportunity to apply what they are learning through activities that help them find their voice. Using the new information and vocabulary from the text and images, students work with a partner or in a small group to talk about what they are learning. Once they have confidence, vocabulary, and a sense of what they want to say publicly, they will tell their ideas to a wider audience.
  • Talk Tips - these are helpful tips to guide students in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary development, tone, voice, and body language when speaking. These tips are revealed as the students engage in the Speaking Up and Speaking Out activities and can be incorporated into their oral language development.
  • Listen Up - these are tips and techniques to help students improve their listening skills.
