Rex A. Lucas taught sociology at the University of Toronto during the 1960s and '70s. Apart from Minetown, his books included Men in Crisis: A Study of a Mine Disaster and (as editor with H.D. Beach) Individual and Group Behaviour in a Coal Mine Disaster. He died in 1978.

Tepperman teaches at the University of Toronto and is the author or co-author of dozens of books and research studies. He has served as president of the Canadian Sociological Association and also received the Association's Outstanding Contributions Award for his work in the field.
