Breakthroughs, Second Edition: Student Book

Second Edition

Marina Engelking and Gloria McPherson

Breakthroughs uses theme-based units to teach advanced ESL learners the keys to expressing critical thought in the English language. It is a four-skill book whose comprehensive, easy-to-navigate Table of Contents gives instructors a clear picture of the lessons and pedagogical features.

The body of the text includes ten units. Each unit incorporates advanced vocabulary, reading, grammar, writing, and listening exercises; most of these sections appear twice throughout any given unit. Units begin with discussion questions that prompt class interaction and the exchange of analytical thought about that unit's topic. Vocabulary lessons use word association and dictionary exercises to further improve advanced learners' diction while advanced, thoughtful reading exercises allow students to practice and further understand the new diction. Grammar features appear twice throughout units and teach essential skills for advanced learners while writing exercises help to cement new concepts. Finally, new and improved listening exercises encourage advanced learners to hone their understanding of native speakers' fast-paced speaking styles.
