Writing History

A Guide for Canadian Students, Second Edition

William Kelleher Storey and Helen Towser Jones

Writing History is designed as a supplementary volume for students taking introductory-level history courses. It covers all aspects of writing about history, including finding topics and researching them, interpreting source materials, drawing inferences from sources, and constructing arguments. It includes three chapters that discuss writing effective sentences, using precise wording, and revising. With numerous examples from the works of cultural, political, and social historians, Writing History is an ideal supplement to history courses that require students to conduct research.

The first Canadian edition of the book, published in 2004, was a light adaptation of the American book and has been a strong seller across the country. The new edition will feature updated references, new material on researching Internet sources, and a new final chapter on preparing book reviews, research proposals, exam answers, and annotated bibliographies.
